Rather than paying the capital gains taxes on the sale of your investment property, Section 1031 of the Internal Revenue Service’s Tax Code allows you to defer payment of capital gains taxes due on the sale of real property if the exchanger, through a qualified accommodator, purchases a replacement property within 180 days of the original sale date.
